In this blog we share some tips on how to reduce stress, fatigue, worry and anxiety, and staying calm.

When you stay calm and tranquil, your reactions to situations and people will be different. People will love to be around you and work with you. People prefer to deal with a person who is more balanced rather than someone who has little control over his or her temper. Staying calm and tranquil returns the much coveted peace we need and crave in our lives. It has a positive effect on our long term health and well being. It reduces stress, fatigue, worry and anxiety.

Below are some ways to help you maintain your tranquility in tough situations:

1. Manage Stress by Practicing self control in tough circumstances

“You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”

― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

When things don’t happen the way you anticipated them, do not stress or be anxious. Instead, remain calm and serene. Calmness in the midst of adversity and tough circumstances reflects maturity and wisdom, and is gained with practice.

2. Do not get upset or stressed out when someone disapproves or disagrees with your position

“Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor.”
― Thich Nhat Hanh, Stepping into Freedom: Rules of Monastic Practice for Novices

If someone disagrees with your position or does not approve of your actions or behavior, do not get upset. Maintain your position calmly. You don’t need to change your perspective or position if you believe in it but you don’t need to feel upset or frustrated or argue incessantly if someone else disagrees with it.

3. Practice mindfulness

“Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor.”

― Thich Nhat Hanh, Stepping into Freedom: Rules of Monastic Practice for Novices

Focus on your breath for a few minutes. When you do that, for a few minutes, you are in the present moment and your thinking slows down. You don’t focus on the negativity of the past or future worries. You are aware and in the now. Acknowledge you are complete and whole in the here and now. Enjoy being alive in the present moment. This will make you relaxed.

4. Smile consciously in awareness

“People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don’t even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child—our own two eyes. All is a miracle.”

― Thich Nhat Hanh, The Miracle of Mindfulness: An Introduction to the Practice of Meditation

Smiling consciously is a very powerful choice. It relieves stress, makes us calm, elevates your mood and the mood of others around you. It activates your neurochemistry, lowers blood pressure and releases positive chemicals such as endorphins and serotonin. Smiling consciously makes you feel better and returns you to the peace which we thought we had lost.

5. Love yourself unconditionally

“Accept yourself, love yourself, and keep moving forward. If you want to fly, you have to give up what weighs you down.”

― Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart

“The only person who can pull me down is myself, and I’m not going to let myself pull me down anymore.”

― C. JoyBell C.

Loving yourself unconditionally makes you more centered. When you truly love who you are, you will be more calm. You will commit to yourself that your peace and happiness is the top priority, rest all is secondary. Many situations and things which would have triggered unpleasant feelings inside you earlier, will seem trivial and not impact you anymore.
